The moderates decided in last congress in the fall of 2017 to work before the 2018 election to introduce a rental system that is more similar to market rents. What does that mean?
In Sweden have today we have a so-called use value system. This means that the rents in the public housing companies are set based on various social factors: the location of the home, the proximity to shops and community services, etc. The idea is that the rents should be reasonable. As you know, everyone needs somewhere to live. However, the alliance wants to replace the use value system with market rents. How purchasing power people are to decide how and if they get a home.
If the rents were raised significantly and generally, the middle class would have to move to worse, cheaper apartments. Many of those who today live in worse, cheaper apartments would become homeless. Those who could stay would have to live in extremely cramped quarters, which is a health hazard in itself with the risk of, among other things, tuberculosis.
So would the social economy become worse off with a higher rental situation. With more reasonable rents today, many can afford to not only pay their rent but also keep many businesses running with their consumption of its businesses' goods and services. This consumption alongside the rent would decrease significantly with a generally more expensive rental situation.
The tenant association works actively so that "everyone has the right to a good home at a reasonable cost". You can join the Tenant's Association here.
