The government's long-term investigation now proposes fees for higher studies. That is, studies at colleges and universities. If Sweden does not want to become an impoverished and backward country, a high proportion of the population must be highly educated. We will not be able to assert ourselves in the global economy if only a few can afford to study further at university and college.
The equal right of all social classes to the opportunity for higher education is also a democratic issue. Higher education gives a greater ability to understand society and to orient oneself in it to one's own advantage. If fewer can afford to study, then this means a power shift in favor of the haves when only the rich can afford to be educated.
Last but not least, fees for higher education cement class gaps and reduce the opportunities for working-class children to make the journey to class. Do we want it that way?
