US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has said that she intends to put an end to the free trade agreement TPP, which concerns the US and the Pacific countries. Then the sister agreement TTIP between the US and the EU will probably also fall. Both free trade agreements are really only free trade agreements in name. What they really do is an enormous transfer of power from democratic, elected rulers to the owners of today's large corporations.
Through the ISDS clauses, the big companies could sue if they later make decisions that could reduce the prospect of increased profits for foreign investors. This would make it extremely difficult to make decisions that make the country red-green. Then came the addition that the big companies would have the right to review future bills before they were put to a vote in the parliaments. Then regulatory standards between the various agreement countries would be harmonised, which would mean that in many cases the country with the worst environmental, health and worker protection laws risked becoming the standard in the other agreement countries as well.
But continue to vote against the sister agreements TPP, CETA and TTIP until they are officially scrapped in legal order. Bill Clinton was first against NAFTA which was a kind of 90's TTIP for the North American continent. Then he signed anyway to implement NAFTA.
We need international solidarity but also regional and national independence.
Protest against anti-democratic free trade agreements!
