The subsistence allowance or the social allowance is intended as a lifeline. Those who cannot earn their livelihood through work or in other ways must be able to receive livelihood support. The national standard is set at rent + SEK 3. per single household. If welfare support had followed wage and price trends since the mid-890s, however, the level been significantly higher:
"- In 2011, the subsidy would be between SEK 5 and SEK 600 depending on how you calculate, if the subsidy followed the price changes in society. Since then, the gap has probably widened, possibly the curve over the gap has flattened out a bit, says Åke Bergmark."
There are several reasons for increasing the subsistence allowance. Society's most vulnerable must be able to have a reasonable standard of living. The financial related stress would be reduced drastically. Purchasing power would increase and set the wheels in motion. We all benefit from a humane and strong society.
PS. There have also been reports that requirements for "work" existed in order to receive support. This is not legal. If you or someone else is subjected to such pressure, appeal the decision and contact your union. Alternatively, go to the media.
