An increasingly pressured Putin initially believed in a walking victory in Ukraine. Instead, the military operation has evolved into the most brutal of invasions. But Ukraine, with commendable support from the West, is effectively resisting. But if Putin loses the war, he will likely have to step down. Then his future fate and perhaps also life is in danger. This makes a pressured Putin all the more erratic, the more the war does not go his way. Then he can escalate the war into a third world war. One solution is for the West to try to buy Putin out.
Putin may leave power but under somewhat favorable conditions. Then, like after the Second World War with Germany, we should build up Russia so that it does not have to go to war in order to have an economy that can support the country. Just as the brutal war reparations at Versailles after World War I contributed to World War II, allowing Russia to collapse into a gangster economy after the fall of the Soviet Union contributed to today's situation.

Sun Tzu would have agreed, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_Tzu: "Always keep a back way open for the opponent."
But it is important to go further than that. The Russian opposition to America's Neocon world domination plans is perfectly reasonable - even if the opposition so far has been horribly destructive and incompetent. Why couldn't the EU plus the Shanghai Economic Association's member countries push for the US to find a reasonable place befitting its approximately 5% of the world's population?
