Working poor - we have them in Sweden. 7,4% of full-time workers were at the end of the right-wing government called the Alliance 2006-2014 working poor. They needed to supplement their wages with social security benefits to make ends meet. It is an American phenomenon that is new in Sweden. The work line was created by the Alliance in the belief that lower wages create more jobs. But poor consumers cannot consume. Poor consumers are lured into debt, which led to the financial crisis of 2008. As more and more people are too poor to consume, growth and profits for the rich fall. True economics is connected with solidarity ethics.

The working poor were more common under the bourgeois government 2006-2014 than under social democratic governments 2014-2022, according to a new study from Gothenburg University. At the end of 2022, the working poor in Sweden was again around the normal level of 1,5-2%. In the past, single women aged 30–39 were usually the poorest despite working, but now it is foreign-born married men between the ages of 30 and 49 who live with the least margins despite working. To be counted as "working but poor", a person must live in a household with an annual income that is below the relative poverty line, which is 60 percent of the disposable median household income in Sweden. Prisoners mainly have jobs, but with such low incomes that they do not reach the poverty line. According to the researchers, more and more working but poor people are stuck in low incomes and few get out of poverty. The study also shows that immigrant men are more likely to have low-paid service jobs and have not had the opportunity to take part in higher education.
