Job or work? What is the difference? A big difference. Where is the meaningful and effective work? See video we were inspired by for this article!
Carrots can be effective for a while for the mechanical and performance jobs. But the carrot and the stick can also wear out our health, capacity and ability. This way is neither economically efficient nor sustainable.
People are not as predictable and manipulable by money as a reward system. More factors influence which
- independence to be able to govern oneself
- the ability to master things
- the very purpose and meaning
Sustainability comes when we are part of nourishing, creative and creative work. Efficiency comes from cooperation and the freedom to be able to plan, decide, implement and follow up towards the common goal for and with the environment. That everything turns out well for those we carry out the mission for.
Work, work we hear. The job line applies. "Jobba" is reminiscent of Job in the Old Testament who had to toil badly and suffer greatly. Jobs are associated with the tempo jobs, the standardized routine jobs, and the operator jobs that perform according to a system or an assembly line.
The targets contain more result-oriented figures in a murderous profit and cost hunt. However, productivity and efficiency are not the same thing.
Productivity measures "speed" in numbers in a time and space perspective - often in the short term and for a limited circle and business. The pursuit of profit and cost becomes an illusion here, which suboptimizes and which consumes finances, people and resources for the interests of the few. The goal is rationalized into material goals.
Everything material that is produced is in fact a tool and means for the destination. Energy is a means. Technology is a means. A computer is a tool. Profit is similarly a means to be reinvested in a new utility.
Efficiency refers to competence and a smart economy of resources to fulfill the purpose and benefit. The human goals are overall goals and therefore come before the material ones.
Removing a cost in one place may instead increase costs in another place. Branches that we are sitting on have been sawn. High profits in a company can cause both damage and large societal losses. We see how the electricity market reaps huge profits, which undermine the profitability of the other industries. We see the neglect in care for the elderly. Stress illnesses in working life create long-term ill health and large societal productivity losses. Instead of development often comes settlement.
Work (cf. English work) contains the creative element where the meaningful lives and has its roots towards fellow human beings. We are here both creative and social fellow human beings.
The true meaning of work is a creative process from a thought in our interior to our surroundings - from the inside-out. This provides the meaningful, independent and creative work. It expresses our ability and know-how.
We can recognize this in areas that use cognitive skills such as in science, art, writing, entrepreneurship, product development, non-profit activities, association life, etc.
It is most effective if everyone receives a salary that promotes independence so that we don't have to focus on how little or how much money we earn. Instead, we can participate in creative and meaningful work with cognitive thinking and ethical responsibility.
Prolonged stress depletes and lowers quality results and efficiency. We don't live on money alone. The meaningful and the non-profit is an engine for many that drives people to create new innovations and aids.
Finally, we are stimulated to perform better if we are allowed to perform a work task in our own way, if the task develops a skill in us and if it contains purposes that give birth to new conditions for the good of all.
