For a long time it was a contract between the people and the authorities in Sweden that the more you work, the easier it gets. If you studied hard at school, you got a white-collar job where you had to sit down. If you worked hard on the floor, you could qualify for a lucrative labor job as an assembly line worker. Life wasn't so easy there, but you got money that allowed you to buy yourself a harmony in life anyway. Students were poor, but could take extra jobs in trade and have a more tolerable existence. Social insurance was relatively generous so that purchasing power would not be undermined and growth threatened if a factory shut down or some employees fell ill. In part, it still is. But hard jobs bring less and less money and white-collar jobs are increasingly tiring. In order to hold on to the temporary side jobs as a student or manage the first low-level white-collar jobs after graduation, you need to be fast and have extreme cadaver discipline. The first jobs knock out many who would otherwise have been able to contribute for decades at a more adequate level.
This path, where fewer have to work harder for less, leads to a murderous fight for the scraps from the table of the rich and creates both right-wing and left-wing extremism. Two things the authorities need to learn again. Everyone who works needs regular time for recovery and play or they get sick. It is the vast majority of the people, the low and middle income earners, who keep the consumption going which keeps the growth going. A poor majority of the population can only approach an ever-shrinking upper class.
Restore the distribution between workers and power. Again reward the people so that we can put up with the subjugation. Power cannot only take, it must also give.
